Ryan Adams - “Round and Round” (Ratt Cover)

At this point, an official album of ’80s metal songs interpreted as heartfelt acoustic cuts by Ryan Adams doesn’t seem too far-fetched. Following up last year’s Iron Maiden cover — not to mention versions of a few alt-rock favorites from the era by Bob Mould and Galaxie 500 — Adams capped off his big 2011 return with an equally revelatory take on Ratt’s most lauded hit: 1984’s “Round and Round” (an iconic hair-metal jam that memorably featured comedian Milton Berle in its official video).

DRA’s latest cover was first tested out on the road before he brought it to CBC’s Q Radio in December and, most recently, NPR. Hear the former version above, while Jian Ghomeshi’s full interview, in which his side of the “Summer of ‘69” story is told in hilarious detail along with two more performances, is here.

The Evens Return with New Single: Warble Factor / Timothy Wright

Fugazi remain on hiatus while their extensive live archive progresses, but in the meantime, co-frontman/Dischord Records leader Ian MacKaye has another band returning to the studio after a half-decade-long absence: The Evens, MacKaye’s politically charged duo with Amy Farina announced the release of a new 7” this week. Due out on November 24th, the set features A-side “Warble Factor” backed by “Timothy Wright.” (The latter cut is presumably a reference to gospel singer Rev. Timothy Wright, who died in 2009 due to injuries sustained in a car crash the previous year.)

Dischord also revealed that the baritone guitar/drums duo recorded their new material with longtime Minor Threat/Fugazi producer Don Zientara, with whom they’re working on a full-length follow-up to 2006’s Get Evens. The Evens are aiming to release their third LP next (election) year. Pre-orders for “Warble Factor” should go live here shortly. Meanwhile, you can revisit a live take on “Cut from the Cloth” below:

Ryan Adams Covers Iron Maiden - “Wasted Years”

On BBC Radio 2 today, Ryan Adams stopped by for a live performance and interview, in which he described the process behind writing his new Ashes & Fire tune, “Lucky Now,” discussed working with producer Glyn Johns, and heard host Simon Mayo read a few pieces of glowing fan mail. Armed only with his Buck Owens acoustic, Adams played the new single before covering Iron Maiden’s “Wasted Years,” the 1986 Somewhere in Time single he once highlighted in a list of favorite metal songs for Blender. Hear the unplugged take, which fits surprisingly well alongside his latest original cut, above.
